BALFOUR BEATTY LAUNCHES INNOVATIVE APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME DURING NATIONAL APPRENTICESHIP WEEK

Balfour Beatty, the international infrastructure group, launched ‘Balfour Beatty Apprenticeships’ in Bolton Town Hall, last Friday, as part of the Blackburn with Darwen and Bolton Building Schools for the Future (BSF) project. Balfour Beatty, the international infrastructure group, launched ‘Balfour Beatty Apprenticeships’ in Bolton Town Hall, last Friday, as part of the Blackburn with Darwen and Bolton Building Schools for the Future (BSF) project. Balfour Beatty Apprenticeships will be delivered in partnership with the North West Apprenticeship Company and will provide the opportunity for young people to participate in apprenticeships in a range of occupational areas including, construction trades, ICT and facilities management, whilst working within Balfour Beatty’s supply-chain companies. Balfour Beatty Apprenticeships has been developed by the Balfour Beatty Education team to maximise local benefits at all stages of the Blackburn with Darwen and Bolton BSF project. Balfour Beatty Apprenticeships will employ the apprentice, match apprentices to companies within the Balfour Beatty supply-chain, organise on and off-the-job training and undertake HR and administrative responsibilities for the programme. Balfour Beatty will reassign apprentices within the supply-chain throughout their apprenticeship to ensure continuity of employment, security and breadth of on-the-job experience to ensure achievement of the full apprenticeship framework. Commenting today, at the launch, Balfour Beatty Chief Operating Officer, Andrew McNaughton said; “It has become increasingly challenging for businesses, in particular small businesses, to commit to and support apprenticeships. Balfour Beatty has responded to this challenge by creating Balfour Beatty Apprenticeships, a flexible and sustainable apprenticeship model for Balfour Beatty and its supply-chain which will deliver a long-term skills legacy to local communities.” Blackburn with Darwen Council’s executive member for children’s services, Councillor Chris Thayne, said: “At this present time, education, training and employment is so important for the development of young people in this area These new apprenticeships will offer the working and learning opportunities that young people across Blackburn with Darwen need and as such they will form an extremely important part of what the BSF programme can deliver” Bolton Council’s Deputy Leader Councillor Linda Thomas said: “Balfour Beatty’s supply chain will bring much needed valuable opportunities for our young people across Bolton in both work and education. The multi-million pound Building Schools for the Future programme is already reaping benefits for the town and will do so for many years to come.” The new apprenticeship model will be rolled out to other Balfour Beatty projects throughout 2010 and will be in addition to existing opportunities and initiatives offered by Balfour Beatty which include: • apprenticeships in trades as diverse as building services, utilities, rail engineering and facilities management; • the development of the industry’s first Higher Apprenticeship in construction management and quantity surveying, enabling apprentices to achieve an Honours degree and NVQ Level 4, eventually working towards chartered membership of a professional institution; • the National Skills Academy for Construction initiative, in which Balfour Beatty is a significant partner, providing eight project based skills centres on Balfour Beatty sites across the country which aim to maximise employment, education and skills opportunities across the entire project and its supply-chain, leaving behind a skills legacy as significant as the construction projects themselves; • Balfour Beatty’s support, as a patron of the Prince’s Trust, of ‘Get into Construction’, a programme that provides disadvantaged young people with the opportunity to gain skills and work experience to support their entry into the industry as well as the ‘Team Programme’ that develops young people’s employability skills.
